Kosrae has a long history of weaving and other handicraft. In ancient times the Island was famous for the fabric woven from banana fibers. There is significant interest in this traditional type of weaving and it is a craft that may be resurrected, but that is not what I’m writing about today.
A few days ago we arranged for a group of divers from (Oceanic Ventures) to visit one of our local weavers to learn about how her weaving is created. Our “short” introductory visit turned into a two-hour class on materials and weaving techniques by our wonderful neighbor, Ines Alokoa.
Ines was already working on a commission for Christmas ornaments, but she cheerfully put them aside to show us some larger pieces.
Some of the group decided to try their hand at making Christmas stars.
